Sperm Whales
The Sperm Whale is the largest of the toothed whales and is found in Mirissa, Sri Lanka. They are known for their distinctive block-shaped heads and are typically dark grey or brown in color. Sperm Whales can grow up to 20 meters in length and weigh up to 60 tons.
In Mirissa, Sperm Whales are commonly sighted during the months of December to April when they migrate to the area to feed on the abundant squid. They are often seen diving deep into the water in search of their prey, and can stay underwater for up to an hour at a time.
Sperm Whales are a protected species and are listed as vulnerable due to hunting in the past. Mirissa is a popular destination for whale watching tours, and responsible tour operators follow strict guidelines to minimize disturbance to the whales and their habitat. Watching these majestic creatures in their natural environment is a truly awe-inspiring experience.
