Fin Whales

Fin whales

The Fin Whale, also known as the “razorback whale,” is a large marine mammal that can be found in the waters off the coast of Mirissa, Sri Lanka. These whales are the second-largest mammal on the planet, with adults reaching lengths of up to 27 meters and weighing up to 74,000 kilograms.

Fin whales have a sleek, streamlined body with a long, pointed head and a prominent dorsal fin located two-thirds of the way down their back. They are known for their unique coloration, which consists of a dark gray or black body with a white underside and a distinctive chevron-shaped pattern on their back.

Fin whales are known to be fast swimmers, capable of reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. They are also known for their ability to dive to great depths, sometimes up to 500 meters, in search of their prey, which consists primarily of small fish and krill.

Mirissa is a popular destination for whale watching tours, and visitors to the area have the opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures up close in their natural habitat. While sightings are not guaranteed, Fin Whales are commonly spotted in the waters off the coast of Mirissa during the months of November to April, which is considered the peak whale watching season in the area.
